BEIJING, CHINA / RankWire.AI / – Artificial intelligence is moving deeper into traditional Chinese medicine education, research and clinical support across China. Beijing University of Chinese Medicine has developed a specialized large model built around extensive TCM knowledge and learning materials. The Xinhuo TCM system includes classical texts, medical theories, herbal information, prescriptions and teaching resources. Its developers launched the first version in 2025 and expanded the platform during 2026.

The university says Xinhuo TCM now operates as a 70-billion-parameter system built on major Chinese artificial intelligence platforms. Developers designed the model to support learning, teaching, research, administration and international communication related to traditional Chinese medicine. Students can ask questions about herbal combinations and receive explanations about formulas and their underlying principles. The university has also developed an intelligent robot that demonstrates traditional massage techniques for practical instruction.

China’s expanding use of AI in traditional Chinese medicine also covers medical knowledge management and clinical support tools. Digital systems can organize historical medical literature and structure information from experienced practitioners for education and research. Researchers are also examining artificial intelligence for diagnostic data, pre-consultation systems and other forms of decision support. These projects reflect a wider effort to connect traditional medical knowledge with modern data and computing systems.

China expands digital infrastructure for TCM

China placed artificial intelligence within its national traditional medicine development framework for the 2026 to 2030 period. The National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the National Development and Reform Commission issued the plan in July. It calls for high-quality artificial intelligence datasets specifically designed for the traditional Chinese medicine sector. The plan also supports digital infrastructure, smart traditional medicine hospitals and intelligent diagnostic assistance at primary healthcare facilities.

The national framework places data governance alongside the expansion of artificial intelligence tools throughout the traditional medicine system. It calls for stronger data classification, protection and compliant circulation across healthcare, research and related digital services. Authorities also want wider use of standardized intelligent equipment and digital technologies in traditional Chinese medicine. These measures cover clinical services, education, scientific research and the management of traditional medicine information.

AI tools move from classrooms toward clinical support

Research published in 2026 has also examined how large language models perform inside traditional Chinese medicine healthcare settings. One study evaluated an AI pre-consultation system at a tertiary traditional medicine hospital and reported preliminary physician acceptance. Doctors responded more positively to its ability to collect information before consultations than to several decision-support functions. Researchers identified remaining limitations involving complaint capture, workflow integration, documentation demands and accessibility for older patients.

The latest developments show artificial intelligence spreading across several parts of China’s traditional Chinese medicine system. Xinhuo TCM has received national generative AI service registration, placing the specialized model within China’s regulatory framework for public AI services. Current applications span education, research, knowledge organization, hospital workflows and auxiliary diagnostic technologies. China’s 2026 to 2030 TCM plan now gives artificial intelligence datasets and digital medical infrastructure a formal role in the sector’s development.
